Make Your Own 100 Calorie Snack Packs (& Our New Adoption Spotlights!)

Before I get started…I just want to make sure you notice something REALLY important…do you see it?  Look around…You’re right!  It’s our adoption spotlight on Isaiah, isn’t he adorable?  Adoption is something that has always been really close to my heart.  I am not adopted, nor have I ever adopted.  But, my whole life my father has been a case worker doing adoptions.  He now is the manager of LDS Family Services in Salt Lake…so, he doesn’t really DO adoptions but he keeps tabs on all of the agencies.  So, adoption has always been a part of my life and still is.  As a young girl, I would frequently accompany my father on business trips where he would have to pick up the baby from the birth mothers (so sad!) and bring the baby to it’s new family (so happy!)  Despite being a young girl, it was obvious to me that I was witnessing one of the most beautiful exhibitions of love I will ever see.  I get goosebumps just thinking of it!  I am so thankful for all of the experiences I had growing up that taught me how important and special adoption is.
This is me…8 years old, squinting in the sunlight…with my awesome Dad!
Several times, while I was waiting for my father to get off work…I would sit in his office chair and browse through binder after binder of the profiles of children waiting to be adopted.  It really broke my heart to think how these children didn’t have anyone who wanted them.  How would that feel???  I can’t imagine….nobody to come to every day for a big hug, some advice, some consistent love.  I decided at that age that when I was older I would adopt them ALL.  I wanted all of them.
Well, I’m older now…have 4 children of my own…and have not adopted.  It’s not to say I won’t ever, the timing just isn’t right.  But, I know that there are LOTS and LOTS of couples out there who can’t have children or maybe they do have children…and just feel like they have more love to give.  If you are in that situation, PLEASE consider some of these older children.  I know that having a baby in your home is a wonderful experience but your life could also be so blessed by an older child…a child who has been yearning for SO long for a permanent home and family.
Since I’m a huge adoption fan and Jessica has had the opportunity to adopt her darling son, we decided to partner with www.adoption.com and will be featuring a new child every Sunday.  If you are interested in finding out more about them, please visit their link.
Okay, on to a completely unrelated subject…watching your calories…I know, COMPLETELY unrelated.  Those 100 calorie packs we buy at the store can be so convenient for quick snacks and staying on top of portion control.  But, they’re pretty pricey and there aren’t a lot to choose from!  Never fear, my sweet friends.  Make your own 100 calorie packs!  Just get a bunch of mini-ziploc bags and prepare several packs at a time.  Keep some in the cupboards, the car, and your purse.  They are great for keeping you out of drive-thrus and the bags of Oreos.
Here are some ideas for you that total 100 calories:
1 small orange
2/3 cups cocoa puffs
15 mini carrots
3 TBS raisins
12 soy crisps
1 cup watermelon
13 Stauffer’s animal crackers

If you’re like me, at least ONE of your New Year’s resolutions has to do with your health…so, hopefully these ideas will help you stay on track!

  1. Love this post. Especially the adoption part. I couldn’t agree more. I am not adopted but I know it changes lives for the better if the right fit is found. And your healthy tips on foods, an answer to many outbursts of, “what can I eat?” Thank you caloric fairy god mother!

  2. When I think of your dad, that picture is what I see- the dark hair and mustache! Having two adopted siblings and parents that boarded babies until they were ready to be placed, I have strong feelings about how wonderful adoption is.

  3. My husband and I were in the beginning stages of adoption when we discovered we were pregnant for the sixth time with our now second child. I cannot express to you how great the need is for adoptive parents! We are definitely planning on adopting once our littlest one is a bit older. Thank you for bringing this important issue to the front of our minds.

  4. So cool you are joining with adoption.com, you guys really are all over the map! Obviously I am a HUGE fan of adoption since all of my children are adopted, and only one as an infant – so I know that older children adoptions can work as well. I bet your experiences with your dad were amazing. Thanks for your always amazing posts!

  5. Oh I am a HUGE fan of adoption- we would never have Sawyer our sweet beautiful little boy. I know there are so many kids out there that deserve loving homes. Please help!

  6. It was my husband who convinced me that I didn’t need a “baby” to adopt, when there were so many older kids out there who needed homes. We officially adopted our sibling group of two little girls (now 5 1/2 & 4) recently (they’ve been with us for 2 years). We’re gearing up to adopt more! I LOVE ADOPTION!!!

Now about your second post. Thanks for getting me inspired to make “snack packs” for me and my family. I KNOW this will help with losing weight and portion control.

    Again, thanks for the inspirations!!!
