Mini Skort to Tote Bag! It Worked! (she: Sarah)

Hi, I’m so nervous and excited to be over here today “guest posting” I’m so very nervous, I hope you like me :) I feel like I’m in the “cool” group now…

So, a little bit about myself, and then I’ll show off what I made yesterday. My name is Sarah, and I’m Joe’s wife for almost 9 sometimes good, sometimes bad years. I have 2 kids Nelson (5) and Grace (4). Before kids, I was a nurse (wrong path) and just recently I discovered my creative side. I love all sorts of crafting, and will eventually try everything, well, most everything. Right now, I have a hard time deciding which craft I want to do, and still remembering to take care of my family. I do want to add, that I am a recovering shopaholic, not the “I love to shop tee, hee”, but the “I hide purchases/credit cards from my husband” shopaholic. Tomorrow on my blog I will have a post about it. I think this is a topic that needs to get out there because there are a lot of people with this addiction, and I would like to save as many people as I can, the pain that I and my husband have gone through…….

I have a little blog, So Cute by Sarah, I just started a few weeks ago, so there isn’t much on there…… but I’m wanting to do a whole bunch. My blog is my way of journaling my journey through my goals for this year, and my life as a woman, a wife a mom and a friend. I have lofty goals for this year and I’m hoping not to fall flat on my face. A few goals for this year are: run a 5K (this is going to be good – um since I don’t run), (( and we are going on a hiking trip this summer: um, I don’t hike either- but I really want to )) )) eat vegetables (I don’t like vegetables) , have more people over, and it would be great if I actually would stop procrastinating and finish decorating my house ( I keep changing my mind), oh and drink LESS Coke. I just can’t give it up, I’ve tried, it’s impossible.

So enough about me and now here is what I made yesterday (Disclaimer – totally not the greatest sewer in the world. )
I had this Mini Skort – why I bought it, who knows, b/c um…. I’ve had two kids, and would definitely not look good in it at all. I decided to make it into a tote bag. I love totes and purses, and I’m getting tired of the ones I have, so it’s time for something one. I do realize this is not a new idea, but it is so cool. I can’t believed it worked! Here are some pictures! Enjoy!

So, here’s the skort…..

I cut off the most of the “shorts” part….. I made this up as I went along, so I played it “safe” with the cutting…. oh and save that material, I used it for the straps…..

so, then I made a 2″ cut out square to make the bottom of the bag.

then I sewed the bottom, and made the box corners for the bottom, I can’t remember what those types of corners are called…….

I took the leftover material I had cut off earlier, kinda made them sorta straight looking ( I wanted something “different” ) for my straps. I “frayed” them in the wash…
well, I was waiting for them to be “frayed” I made this for my son. This shirt had a stain on it…… :) not anymore…… (I hope y’all can tell that’s a guitar- I can’t draw very well -YET)
So, then I sewed on the straps……

made the lining…. this is where I had a few problems…. somehow my lining was too big, so I had to resew/cut a few times….. HELP?

Then add some decorations ! I love flowers… they are helping me think Spring!

At this point, I’m doing the happy dance all over b/c it totally worked ! I can’t wait to use it tomorrow!

So, there you have it. I hope you have enjoyed reading today! Come visit me at So Cute by Sarah.
I’m planning a couple of giveaways, the first one will be next week.

LOVE the purse. I just got a sewing machine and I’m going to be teaching myself how to sew too. This looks like a great project to add to my “figure-out-how-this-thing-works” list ;) Thanks so much.
