Hello again! It’s me, Kate, invited back for my second guest post. My first one was about how I like to randomly burst into tears at the gym. This still happens to me occasionally by the way.
As I mentioned in that post, I am a hair stylist. And, for the record, a curly hair snob. And a no-pooer. Google that one. At any rate, there has been a request for some hair instruction here. So now I will attempt to e-instruct you how to perform a messy updo.
I have been doing hair for a good 12 years now, and after a lot of practice, I’ve kind of become the updo girl. I love doing a beautiful and precise updo for a bride. But thank the heavens above for the messy updo or else I’d probably never leave the house myself. No perfection required. Just sit in front of the mirror with a box of bobby pins and play.
I sport the messy updo just about every single day of my life. My version requires one elastic ponytail holder and two bobby pins. It’s easy, it can look like just the right kind of sloppy, or stick a couple extra bobby pins in it, maybe a braid or twist on the side, and a pretty flower and you look like you’ve got skills and you’re goin’ places. This is perfect for second (or third) day hair, and pretty much any hair texture can play.
Now for my ultimate act of bravery. I decided to make this a video blog because after taking pictures and trying to describe exactly what I was doing, this was going in a majorly BORING direction. So I put my kids to bed and talked to myself (and you!) in my bathroom mirror. I’m super self-conscious about this but I’m going to pretend I’m not. My husband has assured me that I’m still cool. So, please press play and I hope you learn something!
I had to split this in two parts. So go grab yourself a cold Dr. Pepper glass of ice water. Comfy? Here’s the rest.
These are my favorite bobby pins, available at Sally Beauty Supply in a few different colors. I buy the gold ones for my blonde hair. I’m also a fan of elastics that match my hair. I use the Goody Ouchless ones, available pretty much everywhere.

I have always wanted to know how to do the messy updo. I feel like I missed the boat and all the younger girls figured it out but I never did. Now I can do it on my hair and my two little girls’ hair. Thanks!
