Alright ladies. I’ve been having the most annoying problem lately. Here is part of it…..
We have the cutest, sweetest dog who I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world, but he keeps getting in my garden and digging up plants and making holes! GRrrrr. (Not to mention the kids dragging their shovels and doing their part in my “victory garden”) I’m not kidding you, I have replanted it twice this year!
Anyways, IM NOT PLANTING IT AGAIN! (Besides, it’s getting a little late) Maybe no one else has a problem of “critters” ie: dogs, cats, rabbits, kids etc. ruining your garden. So I googled it the other day, and thought why don’t I do a post on it? So here you go friends.
This recipe is supposed to work wonders…. Jerry Bakers Recipe
2 1/2 parts flour
1 part cayenne pepper
1 1/2 parts dry mustard
Mix together and sprinkle around your garden and flower beds. If it rains, you’ll have to do it again:(
Doggy Doo Doo. Dogs naturally will protect their poop. Gross, but if you put their poop in or around your garden and flower beds, they will refrain from digging.
In Austrailia people put 2 liter pop bottles around their yards to keep the dogs away. Don’t ask me, but they say it really works! Just take the bottles, remove the wrappers and fill it with water.
I heard this works with deer too. Take hair clippings, and sprinkle them around the area. The hairs get in their noses, and make them sneeze. They don’t like it. You’ll have to give the whole family haircuts though!
Have your husband go take a leak outside where you want to deter the critters. Supposedly, male urine has a hormone in it, that repels other mammals. It’s almost like he’s “marking his territory”.
If you want to get technical, try the ScareCrow Sprinkler. It has a motion sensor, so when unwanted guests come, they get sprayed. It’s chemical free, and uses no traps! $45 on Amazon.
Tonight, I applied Bonide Dog, Cat and Rabbit repellent around my garden. I sprinkled it 4 feet around and then had to turn the sprinklers on for awhile. Clancy, our dog has been inside with me (while the hubby’s out of town) so we’ll see how it goes. I’ll let you know! $6 on Amazon or at your local garden store.
I’d love to hear your ideas!!

It looks like it’s already backed up to a fence the same as our garden was, and we just added fencing to the rest of it. We picked up some wood fence posts from Lowe’s & put up wood cross beams at the top & midpoint (we also had the wood raised bed like you) – then chicken wire stapled to the inside. Put a gate on one end. Took hubs about a day I think. I can send a picture if it would be helpful.
My sister has a horrible problem with deer in the winter and she says the hair thing doesn’t work for her. Or the cayenne pepper. Maybe because the deer are so hungry they don’t care. They basically have to put chicken wire around everything in the fall and leave it on until late spring.
I like the thought of the husband marking his territory!
I have a buttload of deer that call my house the local “hang-out”. That’s why I have yet to start a garden…I know they’ll mess it up. I’ve also read good things about that sprinkler.
At Home Depot the lady was telling me about this stuff they sold that was a nasty concoction of stuff like blood, vomit, and other foul things that you spread around the perimeter of the garden. Its supposed to repel deer but she said when she used it, it repelled her too! She never wanted to go near her garden cause it smelled like barf.
I’ve been thinking of doing the Square Foot Gardening method and in the book it tells how to build a cage out of chicken wired that sets on top of the garden (like a lid) that keeps the pests away. I’m thinking I’ll try that.
Also, I have given my husband permission to shoot the deer with his paintball gun any time he sees them. Hopefully, they’ll get the hint one of these days…but, their hides are so thick, it doesn’t seem to bother them much. Darn. They’re so cool to look at and watch…but, I really want a garden! It’s a trade-off.
Great post, woman!
I hope this works! Maybe Hunter will learn his lesson the next time he comes over. I’m really sorry:(
Thanks for the great ideas!!
If you want a cheap fence solution, I went and got some green chicken wire and metal poles and made my own fence. It really doesn’t look too bad and it keeps the dog, kids, etc. out. I just wish it would keep the grasshoppers and other creepy crawlers out.
Being a great lover of garden art, I enjoyed going through your blog. keep on posting. Iflorist.co.uk
