This is my cute daughter Grace when she was 6 years old. (She is now 8) In kindergarten she had a male teacher that had a ponytail! He was growing his hair out to donate to Locks of Love. He cut his ponytail for Locks of Love in front of my daughter’s class! The kids thought that it was the coolest thing ever. The parent’s thought it was pretty neat too. Grace’s hair was getting VERY long, and it is very thick, so we talked to her about donating it to Locks of Love.
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics.
This is my daughter after she donated her hair!

That is such a wonderful thing for your daughter to do. If only we can be so giving. Give her a big hi 5 from here in Australia.

We did this, too! (In Canada there is an organization called Angel Hair for Kids, if anyone wants more info about it, there is an entry on my blog, here: http://heathernow.blogspot.com/2010/03/angel-hair-for-kids.html )

How wonderful of your daughter to be so thoughtful. I know it is not easy to cut your hair at any age. it was brave of her and also so kind!

my cousin grew his hair for years… got some funny looks in the process but grew that ponytail down to his heinie before donating to locks of love… couldn’t be more proud 🙂

Your daughter is so pretty and kind. 🙂
You can also donate to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program. They only ask for eight inches (or longer) and the wigs are free (as opposed to a sliding scale like Locks of Love) to women who’ve undergone cancer treatment.

I think it’s a great idea for every woman to donate their hair at least once in their life and help share with other women what they enjoy everyday. I second Emily’s post above, that Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths is great for someone who wants to donate but is a little scared of going too short–the 8 inches they require isn’t too bad 🙂

How fantastic! And what an amazing example you set for others. I have always wanted to do this and am going to put it on my list. I have super long hair so it shouldn’t be a problem 😉

i love locks of love. there is this great documentary on it too that made it easier for my daughter to understand why kids need wigs. it really helped her understand, it’s called “Locks of Love” I watched it on demand a few months ago I’m sure you could get it on Netflix too.
My daughter is excited for when she’s ready to make the cut (she’s 6).
great post!
