~ Apple Dumplings ~

Apple Dumplings.  I was secretly hoping y’all would choose caramel corn when I asked for votes on Facebook, but these are awesome too!  I’m counting down the 2 weeks until new baby but also DREADING my diet.  Hurry, hurry, eat as much crap as I can!!  Anyway, I’ve had a couple dreams about caramel corn, so I’ll have to make that next week.  Maybe after that my recipes will start getting a little more healthy.  But, for now…you’re gaining weight with me.  And, really…these are worth it!  They’re sooooo yummy warmed up with ice cream on the side, whoo!  This is a recipe from the blog goddess, Pioneer Woman…enjoy!

To make apple dumplings, you will need:  Cinnamon, vanilla ice cream (Breyer’s is my fave!), sugar, 2 sticks butter, 2 granny smith, vanilla, 2 tubes of crescent rolls, and 12 ounces of Mountain Dew!

These are insanely easy to make.  Just peel and slice your two apples and wrap a slice in a triangle of crescent dough.  Place in a sprayed pan.

Melt 2 sticks of butter and add a 1 1/2 cups sugar and 1 tsp. vanilla.  Stir.  Soooo healthy, right??

Update 3/12 – I’ve had several readers tell me they like cutting the sugar down to 1 cup.  I just tried it and liked it just as much!  So, might as well use less sugar, right? :)

That smile is totally genuine, can’t you tell?  Shane thinks these are a blast to make!  Okay, not…but, eating them is a blast.
So, pour your butter/sugar/vanilla mixture all over the wrapped apples.  Then pour about 12 ounces of Mountain Dew all around.  Sprinkle with Cinnamon.  You’ll know you’re doing it right if it looks kinda gross.

Throw them in a 350 degree oven for 30 to 40 minutes…just keep an eye on it.  Serve hot with ice cream!

Apple Dumplings
from The Pioneer Woman
2 sticks butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 tubes crescent rolls
2 granny smith apples
12 ounces of Mountain Dew
Cinnamon
Vanilla ice cream

  5. Sure, try it with Diet Mt. Dew…it won’t really do you any favors because of all the butter and sugar in the recipe. But, you might not be able to tell a big difference in taste…I’m not sure! Let me know if you try it with the diet and how it turns out :)

      I don’t really know, I just know it tastes good!  It’s part of the sauce that forms in the bottom of the pan.  Scoop some on top of the dumplings, for sure!

  12. Just a quick correction…. in the photographic directions you say two cups of butter but it should be two sticks. I went back to double check I had the right amount since I only pulled out two sticks. :)

      I’m not sure. If there is a bread recipe, without dairy, that yields a light bread, I’m sure that would work okay. I wish I knew more what had and didn’t have dairy in it, but I don’t. Sorry! If you figure something out, I would love for you to leave it in the comments for others to see. Thanks :-)

    • I’m vegan and can find certain brands of crescent rolls that don’t have any dairy.   You just have to check the label.  Pillsbury original crescents are usually a good bet.   

  14. this reply is a little late, but I used diet mt dew & it was good!  (And i don’t like diet-anything, but it was all they had at the checkout line (when I had forgotten to buy it & didn’t want to lost my spot in line)).  so yummy!!

    love love love them, I’ve been making them for a couple of years, the recipe was given to me at a family reunion…I put 2 slices of apples in each cresent roll, so I have to have more apples, plus I add some rasins and chop pecans…YUM!

      After everything is baked, these apple dumplings don’t taste like Mt. Dew. But, I’m sure you could use Sprite, Ginger Ale, or something similar, if you’re concerned. Good luck!

    • I just found this recipe. I use orange juice. My recipe came from Southern Living. I think the orange juice will be less sweet. It’s really good!!

  20. I know my mom uses Diet Dew.  Do you think I could use Cranberry La Croix Water?

      I actually have never heard of that drink. It’s really hard to say what will work and what won’t, as I’ve only tried Mt. Dew. I imagine anything similar to Mt. Dew (ginger ale, sprite, 7up, etc.) would yield a similar result, but I can’t promise anything J

  21. I wouldn’t use any Diet drink containing aspartame since aspartame turns into a toxic chemical when heated!

    • Even if they decide to use Regular instead of diet… High Fructose Corn Syrup is toxic…laden w/mercury and GMOs. I wish people weren’t so clueless.

      • I think the fear is not about the taste. It’s the fact that Mountain Dew is TOXIC not to mention 100% UNHEALTHY.

  28. I made these last night for our weekly Sunday family dinner.  They were wonderful and everyone loved them.  I really do not like Mt. Dew but you could not taste it after they were baked.

  29. I made these at Thanksgiving but substituted the yam patties in the frozen section at grocery. I had tried them at a church outing. Mine were a big hit. For Christmas I’m now doing them with the apples. I know they will be great! That’s for receipe.

    My sister made these for a family gathering a while back and I fell in love with them! Tried making them for my roommates yesterday and they didn’t turn out so well! The tops burnt, the bottoms were still dough, and the apples were still crunchy! I have no idea what happened – maybe it’s my oven? And for all those asking…the Mtn. Dew just helps “caramelize” it. (Like they need more sweetness!) haha

    Hi, I stumbled upon your blog through pinterest and found this recipe.  I tried it tonight and it was delicious!  My only complaint was that they were a bit soggy on the bottom. Is that the way they are supposed to come out?  I followed the recipe exactly but I have never like soggy bread of any kind so that was my only complaint about it.  I think I may try this again with 1/2 a can of Mt Dew, 1 stick of butter and 1 cup sugar.  I will let you know how that works out for me  =)

      I would love for you to let me know how they turn out. I haven’t made these for a long time, but I don’t remember thinking they were soggy. Although, I did expect them to be wet-ish, since they are sitting in sauce. Do you think they just didn’t cook long enough?

  39. Hi! Your photos are beautiful. Found you on Pinterest and made these last night. Wish I had read the comments first…I would have cut way back on the sugar. My kids loved them, but my husband and I thought they were much too sweet. Will try again though with less sugar and butter. Love the ease of this recipe!

      Ya, I might try it with maybe ½ cup less sugar, too…and see if I agree with the other commenters. So far, I have liked the recipe, as is. But, who knows…maybe it’s even better with less sugar. I’m trying it tomorrow!

    I have made this using sprite as well as diet sprite, used brown sugar (1/2 white 1/2 brown) and it has really always been gobbled up with people requesting the recipe.  This is so gooey delicious!

    I’ve read that Mountain Dew is really terrible for your health…is there any better replacement? What is the purpose of the mountain dew?

      Katerina, if you scroll through the comment section, you will find a lot of ladies mentioning different substitutes. Mountain Dew wouldnt be any worse for you than any other pop, except for the additional caffeine, which you could easily use the caffeine free version. The pop just helps make the syrup that you scoop on top. Its delicious, but of course not healthy, as most desserts arent…darn it . :)

      • Sorry but you seriously need to do some research on Mountain Dew. It’s one of the most TOXIC of all the soft drinks. Not to mention that ALL softdrinks have either High Fructose Corn Syrup ( which is highly toxic and contains mercury and GMOs ) or Aspartame which turns into FORMALDEHYDE once ingested. Not to mention that it causes brain tumors and neurological damage as well as causing auto-immune diseases like MS and Lupus. Also Mountain Dew contains Brominated Vegetable Oil which is a TOXIC FLAME RETARDANT. Also even the makers ( Pepsi ) claim there is so much acid in Mountain Dew it can dissolve a mouse’s body into a jelly-like substance.

        But hey.. DRINK UP UNINFORMED people.

    I just tried this, it’s delicious! I halved the recipe and then also used half as much butter and a little less sugar. I used sprite instead of Mt Dew. Turned out great!
