Great Documentaries for Kids

Hello, again!  So, I’m ALMOST back.  Almost.  Next week, I have a yummy recipe to share with you and some pics of my new little dude…he’s so sweet.  Six kids.  Can you believe it??  I’m still trying to wrap my brain around it.  It’s going to be an adventure!

Meanwhile, I thought I would share with you some documentaries that I’ve had my eye on, for the kids to watch…actually, just bought some.  I’m always looking for some great educational films to use for homeschool.  It’s always a fun break for the kids to make popcorn and curl up to a show, even if it’s a bit educational. 🙂

So, between picking your brains on FB and reading lots of Amazon reviews, here are my top picks of great documentaries for kids:

Spellbound
(We actually just finished watching this one.  It was pretty fun to follow the stories of different kids involved in the National Spelling Bee.  The kids came away from it, thankful that I don’t make them study spelling for hours and hours every day.)
Winged Migration
(With almost perfect reviews, people are saying this is one of their favorite films of all time.  I’ve got to see it to believe it.)
Planet Earth
(A classic, beautiful series, touring our planet.)
How Its Made
(A fun series all about how random things are made…snowboards, buttons, toilets, mozzarella cheese, CDs, tin foil, etc.)
Monumental
(Just bought this, but haven’t watched it yet.  Kirk Cameron travels across the U.S. and Europe, seeking to better understand the foundation of our country.  Cameron seems like an unlikely host, but this history buff has won over reviewers…and, let’s be real…he was my childhood celeb-crush.)
Wild China
(My kids and I really enjoyed this documentary.  There is so much beauty in China!  Loved it.)
Bizarre Foods
(…and my kids think peas are gross.  They’ll get a kick out of these shows!)
Babies
(Following four babies in four different countries.  I think even my own babies would love watching this!)
Knut and Friends
(A heart-breaker and love story…you’ll totally fall in love with Knut, the world’s most famous polar bear.)
March of the Penguins
(One of the most amazing documentaries.  Penguins are awesome.  That’s all.)
Paper Clips
(I can’t wait to watch this with the kids when we start studying World War II.  It’s the story of a middle school in Tennessee that taught diversity and love by focusing on the impact of the holocaust.  The experience turned out bigger and better than they could have hoped for.  Award winning documentary!)
Born Wild
(Hello, cuteness.  I’ve always wanted my own monkey.  Little known fact.)
Families of the World
(Get a glimpse into the lives of families from all over the world.  These movies are pretty pricey, but a FB fan mentioned that she gets them at the library.  Good thinkin.)
Living With Wolves
(I’ve mentioned this on the blog before, but this is one of my favorite documentaries ever.  I was really surprised at how much I liked it!  Bonus, the kids love it too.)
So, how about you?  Do you have any favorite documentaries??  Which ones do your kids like??

We love documentaries! There are a bunch on Netflix about Disney that are so fun to watch- Disneyland, Disney World, Disney Cruises. We also like watching documentaries about National Parks and other random sites (one also on Netflix is called “A Program About Unusual Buildings”).

My kids and I sat and watched Babies last year. None of us spoke. It was amazing and they loved it – even at the ages of 6 and 4 and 2. Thanks for the recommendations!

My kids are 4 and 2. Are there any really kid friendly ones for that age group that you know of? We like Mighty Machines and the All About ones and are ready for something new!
    Thanks!

Let me think about it… if I can come up with some good ones, I’ll put a post together! How about Blue Planet and Planet Earth? Oooh, maybe check out the Come Outside series, only on YouTube.

My son loved “dogs 101” and nature documentaries on bugs.

If your kids can read and don’t mind subtitles “Please Vote for Me” on Netflix is really good about a school election in China.
