-
Dissolve yeast in water in mixer bowl.
-
Heat sour cream in the microwave for about 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds. Add the sour cream, butter, sugar, salt, eggs and 2 cups of the flour to the yeast mixture. Beat until smooth.
-
Mix in enough of the remaining flour to make dough easy to handle. I usually use closer to 7 cups flour all together.
-
Let knead in mixer for 10 minutes, or knead on a well-floured board for 10 minutes.
-
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
-
Heat oven to 375 degrees.
-
Make streusel by mixing all ingredients together; set aside.
-
Punch down the dough and divide into 3 equal parts.
-
Roll each part into a rectangle about 15 inches by 6 inches and about 1/4 inch thick or so.
-
Spread 1/3 of the streusel mix down the center of the rectangle.
-
Using a pizza cutter, cut slits down each side of dough. Try to make equal slits on each side or you'll come out lopsided.
-
Now just crisscross the strips over top the streusel mix. Keep going until all the streusel is covered.
-
Tuck and pinch the dough at the end underneath. Stretch the dough until it looks pretty uniform. You don't want fat parts and skinny parts. Then curve it into a candy cane.
-
Place on cookie sheet that has been sprayed with cooking spray.
-
Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
-
Remove from oven and allow to cool for about 10 minutes. While it is cooling, mix together the glaze ingredients.
-
Place candy cane on wax paper and then drizzle the glaze over the candy cane.
-
Use your maraschino and green cherries to make a holly berry and place on candy cane. I just cut the maraschino cherries in half and used 3 halves and then cut the green cherries into slices. You can just put one on each candy cane or you could decorate the entire candy cane with holly.
