I love to play board games, but right now the only one’s we are playing in our house are Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders and Hungry Hungry Hippos.
Don’t get me wrong I love spending mommy time with my kids, but I need a little adult interaction now and then (besides explaining to the checkout lady how 20 jars of sprinkles got into my shopping cart). So, when family gets together- we like to play games. Here are some of our favorites.
Balderdash is the best bluffing game, and seeing what definitions players come up with is hilarious! You need some knowledge, but no luck or strategy to win this game. BoardGameRatings.com gave it 4 stars while reviewers gave it 5. $24.99 on Amazon.
Settlers of Catan is for all you “strategic” minded players. In this game you want to be the dominant group on a remote island by settling the wilderness. You have to cleverly trade and build your cities. A fairly complex game, with not a ton of luck but more strategy. Fun, and this is a game the guys will play! $33.59 on Amazon.
Apples to Apples. I love this game and younger kids can play also. I like it because there are no wrong answers. It’s all a matter of opinion. This game is very little luck or strategy, but creativity and interaction are a big part. It’s a fast moving game and great for families! It also teaches kids the difference between nouns and adjectives. $20 Amazon.
Ticket to Ride. This is my game of choice at the moment. (and not just because I’m a Carpenters fan) The object of this game is to travel to the most cities in North America, and building the longest train. It can be cutthroat or laid back. The artwork is great, it’s built durable and so so fun! You can see another post on it here. $35.95 Board Game Ratings dot com. Cheaper than Amazon.
Curses. Play this game with your craaazy friends! You have to get into this game to make it fun. You choose challenge cards for example: you have to talk like you have a golf ball in your mouth, you are fingerless, you are giving cpr to a hamster. You keep getting “curses” and it gets hard to do them all at the same time. If you forget a curse and someone catches you, you flip your curse card. Three flipped and you are out. Its a great interaction and creativity game! $23 Amazon.
A few more of my favorites: (which, by the way, all got 5 star ratings…)
What games do you like to play?

Fun post! Dan is such a bummy-face about board games…he has this idea that they are ALL boring. So much MORE boring than watching golf, watching Seinfeld reruns, and fixing broken tools. SO…we don’t play a lot of board games but when we do we love “Pit” and the card game “Kings and Surfs”.
I have always liked “Encore” because I could kick butt at it! It’s a fun game where you are given a word and have to “sing” the line of a real song that has that word in it. Then if you can, the other team has to do it with the same word…back and forth. I always win, you don’t want to play with me.
I still like “Clue” if you play it with older people that know how to be tricky.
As you can see…I’m pretty out of touch with the game world, but not by choice! Maybe we need a girl’s night!

Our family likes Settlers and Trains, but got sick of playing them so much. We have started to play Power Grid and love that one too. To get the guys to play the games are mostly strategy type, but they are lots of fun!

Apples to Apples is one of my very favorite games! It’s so much fun. The only thing is that it’s really meant for a large group. The minumum number of players if four – but it’s really better with even more people. We play whenever we have the extended family over for holidays. Love it!

We are a huge Ticket to Ride fan, if you want there is a website that you can play online too, its fast and still fun. We also like Bonanza, we call it Beans, because you are planting and trading beans. Very fun.

My fiance works at a specialty game store so we have TONS of cool games.
We have ALL the expansions for Settlers of Catan (We have 3 of the original as well because we play HUGE games at our dinner parties)
Pirateers is a REALLY fun game (out of print now though :’-( )
Escape from Pompeii is one of my favorites.
Stratego and Mancala have been my favorites growing up.
We bought Coliseum and Tikal which looks like they’re going to be really fun (they’re 3+ player games and there’s only 2 of us in the house so we have to wait until we have friend over to play)

I love all the games you talked about! Curses sounds fun, and I need to research the last 5 you listed, those are the one’s I haven’t heard of.
Thanks for the ideas!

Ticket to ride is a blast, settlers is too complicated for me… but I played with a bunch of competitors in a fast paced scene just once. It was still a blast… and curses, that is HILARIOUS! Great post Jess!

My mom and I recently came across the funniest game we’ve ever seen at a Farmer’s supply store…. maybe people ought to consider dropping by those places more often to see what they find. It’s called Redneck Life. Basically you go through “life” as a redneck. You open a beer can with your mouth and lose a tooth – dang. Or, you go to a family reunion – add a “youngin” and name him Gene. Anyway, whoever has the most teeth at the end of the game wins. I think we should all consider keeping our teeth in real life to be a ‘win’, too!
