As a mom of 7 kiddos and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I’m always thinking about ways to foster meaningful connections within our ward. Plus, I have several children in Young Mens and Young Womens, and a husband who serves in that calling, as well. I was recently brainstorming (to help out my husband think of an activity for his Teachers Quorum), and a really fun idea popped into my head that I think would be a fantastic way for our Young Men and Young Women to get to know the adults in our ward on a deeper level. Imagine an activity that turns our ward into a treasure trove of untold stories and fascinating facts!
‘5 Things You Didn’t Know’ Latter-day Saint Youth Activity
The concept is simple: a “Five Things You Didn’t Know” game. We’d begin by dividing the youth into at least 3+ teams, creating small groups ready to explore the hidden gems within our ward. Each team would receive a list of 3 adults who have graciously agreed to participate. Of course, we’d give these wonderful adults a heads-up, allowing them time to reflect on the interesting aspects of their lives they’d like to share.
Now, picture this: the teams set out, visiting each assigned adult. They’d ask them to share five interesting things about themselves that most ward members might not know. This isn’t just about surface-level facts; it’s about uncovering the unique experiences, talents, and passions that make each person special. I can just imagine the stories that would unfold! It’s such a great opportunity for our youth to practice their listening skills and learn to truly appreciate the diversity within our community.
After all the visits are completed, perhaps with a friendly time limit to keep things moving, everyone would gather back at the church for a fun game. The excitement would build as one team shares the five interesting facts they learned about an adult, keeping the person’s identity a secret. The other teams would then put their heads together, collaborating to guess who those facts belong to. Each correct guess earns a point, and the team with the most points at the end wins a small prize – a little something to celebrate their detective work. And, of course, everyone gets a treat, because who doesn’t love a sweet ending?
This activity has the potential to be so much more than just a game. It’s a chance to bridge the generation gap, to build a stronger sense of community, and to help our youth develop valuable communication skills. By learning about the diverse experiences and talents of the adults in our ward, our youth can gain a deeper appreciation for the people they see every week at church.
To make this activity a success, it’s important to choose a variety of adults with diverse backgrounds and interests. This will ensure a wide range of interesting facts and stories. And, of course, we need to emphasize respectful listening and create a light, fun atmosphere. After all, the goal is to have a good time and learn something new!
