Hello again! I’m Beth, and I blog over at Free Stylin’. You may remember my previous post about using Glad Press’n Seal as a stencil or in place of vinyl lettering. (I have crazy ideas sometimes, I tell ya!) I’ve always had a love of looking at things in new ways and creating something out of almost nothing. I try to make my home, and the homes of my friends and family, beautiful by using things we already have on hand. My motto: make it as close to FREE as possible!
Like most of you, I’m pretty sure, this is the time of year when my little family catches colds, the flu, and just about anything else we can bring home from work, school, or out and about.
(Thanks for hacking on me, guy at the grocery store. Sheesh.)
I try to stave off many an illness with the usual – washing hands with hot, soapy water; using a tissue; and wiping down the place with Lysol wipes.
And, by drinking my Vitamin C packed, Slushie Punch.
(or as my family calls it: “Janie’s Slushie Punch,” named after my aunt that got us all hooked on it.)
(By the way, I know ‘slushie’ is really spelled ‘slushy,’ but I like it with the ie better. It looks cute.
Kinda like Slurpee. Feel free to spell it how you like, though. 🙂
I like making up a batch or two and freezing it in baggies. When someone starts to cough, a nose starts to run, or one of my Loves gets a scratchy throat, I give them a glass (or sippy cup) of the sweet and icy punch. It’s especially nice on days when you may not feel like eating much but need a little something in your tummy.
So even though these ingredients aren’t necessarily free, they are inexpensive, and
drinking some slushie punch could very easily keep you:
out of the doctors office (skipping that co-pay),
away from the drugstore (buying too many items to count),
out of the car to go to said doctor visit
or drugstore run (saving you gas $),
etc.

Oh, and my favorite:
It keeps me from being sick when I still need to be a mom. These are the ingredients:
It keeps me from being sick when I still need to be a mom. These are the ingredients:
12 oz. frozen lemonade
6 oz. frozen orange juice
Large can (46 oz.) pineapple juice
1 pkg. strawberry Kool-Aid
1 pkg. orange Kool-Aid
2 cups sugar
1 3/4 quarts of water (7 cups)
When I make Slushie Punch, I mix it in a punch bowl. Any large container will work.
I measure and add the water first.
Next I pour in all the rest of the ingredients and stir.
When separating the punch into bags, it’s best to place the baggie in a large, tall cup – leaving the baggie hanging over the edge a bit.
Once all the punch is in bags, freeze them laying flat. Once frozen, they will stand upright, maximizing freezer space.
When you’re ready for a drink,
you can either drink the punch straight up
(but only if you can run with the big dogs! Cuz this stuff is sweet!),
or pour ginger ale over a glass of the slushie ice.
By the way, Slushie Punch isn’t just for medicinal purposes. This punch is great for bridal and baby showers, birthday parties, and luncheons. We served it at The Hubs’s graduation party when he got his degree.
Economical? Yes!
Versitile? Yes!
Yummy? Heck Yes!

Oh pity we don´t have this in Spain!, I caught a cold some days ago and still can´t get rid of it. I´ll have to keep on eating kiwi fruit. Regards from Spain.

I realize this is a friendly blog and not one where people usually criticize, but I read this post yesterday and I can’t get over it. PLEASE don’t feed your children a drink filled with sugar and koolaid when they get sick. They need nourishing food! When I feel sick I drink chicken stock made from the bones of real chickens and I always feel better within a day. As for the koolaid slushie, it sounds like a nice summer-time TREAT!
