Happy Friday OSSS readers! It’s Brooke from Blissful Roots. I know you’re used to seeing me on Tuesdays here, but I’ve switched days, and will now be sharing a post with you on the second Friday of each month. And I’m sure glad the switch of days allowed me to get a St. Patrick’s Day post in before the holiday is here. ‘Tis the season for all things green!! And this St. Patrick’s Day breakfast is sure to be a hit with the whole family.
St. Patrick’s Day is this coming Tuesday. Tuesday is a school day for us, and most of you I’m sure. I love to make holiday breakfasts for my boys, but need something quick when the holiday falls on a school day. Today, I have a quick and easy green breakfast you can give your kids before you send them off to school.
I always like to have the color of foods work for me. Scan your grocery isles for anything and everything green, that way most of the work is already done for you. Here’s a list of the green breakfast foods I used, and a few other ideas as well.
CEREAL
Green berries from Cap’n Crunch Oops! All Berries. You Can also use green Fruit Loops, Trix, Apple Jacks, and any other cereal that has green. It does take a bit of time to pull out the green pieces, but you can do it ahead of time, and have it all ready for the morning of.
Lucky Charms
Don’t forget the green milk!
FRUIT
Kiwi fruit
Green grapes
Green apples
SMOOTHIE
Green smoothies are very popular these days, so if you have a favorite recipe that your kids like, go ahead and use it. I just made my boys’ favorite Orange Julius smoothie, and added some spinach. Sounds crazy, I know, but you don’t taste the spinach at all!! The prefect way to sneak in some healthy veggies, and you kids won’t mind at all. The spinach did add some green color to the smoothies, but I wanted a bit more, so I did add a few drops of green food coloring.
YOGURT PARFAIT
We love yogurt parfaits at our house! My boys eat them every morning. Luckily key lime pie yogurt makes it totally easy to throw together a green yogurt parfait. I just topped the yogurt with some cut up kiwi fruit, and then sprinkled granola on top. So quick and easy, and I promise your kids will love it!!
TOAST
We are wheat bread eaters at our house, so that’s what I used for our shamrock toast, although I have to admit white bread would look better. But, we already have spinach in our smoothie, so we might as well keep up with the healthy breakfast theme, right?! I simply toasted and buttered the bread, then cut it out with a shamrock cookie cutter.
And there you have it! A festive, green, sure-to-start-your-St. Patrick’s Day- off-right breakfast. I’ll also mention I like to use a lot of glasses dishes where I can so the color of the foods are visible. It’s also fun to find green dishes, and of course add extra touches with green straws, utensils, napkins, and shamrocks to add to the whole effect.
If you know me at all, then you know I’m a holiday fanatic, so I’ve got your St. Patrick’s Day covered at Blissful Roots. I have a printable shamrock tic-tac-toe, a fun dice game, Roll-A-Leprechaun, a key lime pie fruit dip, and some printable Irish blessings.
Hope you catch the leprechaun that visits your house this year. My boys are convinced they have THE trap this year that will get the job done! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
