Hi there! It’s Sierra here from The Blue Robin Cottage (spending most of my time these days at The Winking Apple)! I’m so happy to be here today sharing the BEST birthday cake frosting recipe I’ve ever had.
Birthday season is upon my household! In my family we have a birthday in April, June, July and August. We eat cake for months! If you are going to eat cake that frequently, you should probably have a killer frosting recipe to go with it. So today, I’m sharing the best birthday cake frosting recipe! It pairs perfectly with birthday cake and you can make it to the consistency of your liking. Double win!
Here’s what you will need to make this yummy birthday cake frosting:
Ingredients:
*2 Sticks of butter (one cup)
*1 8oz package of cream cheese
*1 Tablespoon of Heavy Whipping Cream (depending on desired consistency)
*1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
*1 Teaspoon of Coconut Extract
*1 lb of Powdered Sugar
Instructions:
- Cream together the butter and cream cheese until smooth in a large mixer.
- Add in Vanilla and Coconut extracts.
- Slowly mix in powdered sugar.
- Add 1 tablespoon of Whipping cream (less or more) until you get desired consistency.
To pipe that perfect cupcake rose swirl, I use a 2D tip, start in the middle and swirl outwards. If I want a more traditional cupcake swirl, I use the same decorator tip but instead of starting the swirl in the middle, I start on the outer edge of the cupcake. 🙂 But, honestly, you don’t have to be fancy. You can fill a ziplock bag with the frosting, snip off one corner, and pipe away. This birthday cake frosting is so forgiving!
This frosting also spreads beautifully onto a double layer birthday cake and works perfectly on sugar cookies! Get creative and try embellishing sheet cakes, cookies, cupcakes and more. It’s so nice having such a versatile frosting that can be used for everything.

I’m going to try this!! I’m pretty set on my buttercream recipe, but this is different enough that I’m totally intrigued. And, Sierra… your pics are beautiful!!

I’ve been using this recipe for years, having been given it by a dutch friend. My favorite improve on it is to substitute orange extract for the vanilla, and to add cocoa. Awesome contrast!
Mariel says
Mmmm… that sounds GOOD!!
Carol says
So how much powdered sugar do you use? I couldn’t find it listed in the ingredients.
Mariel says
Sorry, we just fixed the post! Should be there now.

Hi! Just a friendly FYI, your Pin It buttons do not work. When I go to pin this page, there is no picture and it won’t let you pin it. I just wanted to give you a heads up. Thanks 🙂

This looks great & I’d love to try it! But I’m afraid I don’t see powdered sugar in the ingredient list. How much is needed?
Mariel says
Thanks for the heads up! It’s been fixed now in the post. 🙂

At what point do you put in the cream cheese? Do you cream it along with the butter?
Sue says
So..when do you add the cream cheese?
Wendy says
Does the frosting need to be in fridge after put on cakes ? I would think yes due to cream cheese
