Hey sweet friends! I’m sitting here at my kitchen table, a half-empty mug of hot chocolate (chocolate almond milk with a spoonful of Nutella… yum!) beside me, and the house is finally, blessedly quiet. The kids are at school and work, and my married boys are out doing their thing… living their best life. In these rare, quiet moments, my mind often turns to the things that anchor me amidst the beautiful chaos of motherhood. And at the very top of that list is my relationship with my Savior, Jesus Christ.
So often, when I feel overwhelmed, inadequate, or just plain tired, I turn to the scriptures. The words on those pages are more than just stories; they are a lifeline to peace and perspective. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I cherish the Holy Bible. But I also find immense strength and a powerful witness of the Savior in our other books of scripture. Today, I want to share some of the best Latter-day Saint scriptures about Christ with you, specifically from the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price.
The Best Latter-day Saint Scriptures About Christ
Whether you share my faith or are just curious, my hope is that you’ll feel the beautiful spirit of these passages and see why we believe these books are a treasure chest of truth about the Son of God.
First, What Are These “Other” Scriptures?
Before we dive in, let me give you the super-quick, “mom-on-the-go” explanation of these books. Think of it like this: If you love a series of books from a favorite author, you don’t stop after the first one, right? You want all the stories! That’s how we feel about God’s word.
- The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ: This is the key. Its whole purpose is to be a second witness, alongside the Bible, that Jesus is the Christ. It’s a record of God’s dealings with ancient peoples who lived on the American continent and contains the account of the resurrected Christ’s visit to them. It’s a powerful, beautiful book.
- The Doctrine and Covenants: This is a collection of modern revelations given by God to His prophets, starting with Joseph Smith. It’s unique because, in many parts, it’s Jesus Christ speaking directly to us in our day. It’s like getting a letter from Him!
- The Pearl of Great Price: This is a small collection of inspired translations and writings of ancient prophets like Abraham and Moses, revealing more about the Creation, the plan of God, and Christ’s central role in it all.
All of these books, together with the Bible, point us to one person: Jesus Christ. They help us know Him, love Him, and understand His infinite love for us.
Christ in the Book of Mormon: A Powerful Second Witness
The Book of Mormon is absolutely packed with prophecies, teachings, and testimonies of the Savior. In fact, His name or a title for Him is mentioned, on average, once every 1.7 verses! Here are just a few that are written on my heart.
His Identity and Divine Mission
2 Nephi 25:26 “And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.”
This verse is basically our family’s mission statement. It’s the “why” behind family scripture study, church attendance, and nightly prayers. In a world pulling our kids in a million different directions, my husband and I want them to know, without a doubt, where to find true peace and forgiveness. It’s all about Him.
Mosiah 3:5-8 “For behold, the time cometh, and is not far distant, that with power, the Lord Omnipotent who reigneth, who was, and is from all eternity to all eternity, shall come down from heaven among the children of men, and shall dwell in a tabernacle of clay… And he shall be called Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of heaven and earth, the Creator of all things from the beginning; and his mother shall be called Mary. And lo, he cometh unto his own, that salvation might come unto the children of men… And he shall suffer temptations, and pain of body, hunger, thirst, and fatigue, even more than man can suffer, except it be unto death; for behold, blood cometh from every pore, so great shall be his anguish for the wickedness and the abominations of his people.”
This prophecy, given by an angel to a prophet-king named Benjamin more than 100 years before Christ was even born, gives me chills. It is so specific, so tender, and so powerful. It details His parentage, His suffering, and His divine nature. It makes His sacrifice for us so incredibly real.
3 Nephi 11:10-11, 14 “Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. And behold, I am the light and the life of the world… Arise and come forth unto me, that ye may thrust your hands into my side, and also that ye may feel the prints of the nails in my hands and in my feet, that ye may know that I am the God of Israel, and the God of the whole earth, and have been slain for the sins of the world.”
Can you even imagine? This is the moment after His resurrection when Jesus appears to the people in ancient America. He invites them, one by one, to feel the wounds in His hands, feet, and side. It’s not just a story; it’s an intimate, personal encounter with the resurrected Lord. It’s the climax of the book and one of the most sacred accounts in all of scripture.
The All-Encompassing Power of His Atonement
Alma 7:11-12 “And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people. And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.”
Oh, mama friends, this one is for us. This is one of the most important Latter-day Saint scriptures about Christ for me, personally. His Atonement wasn’t just for sin. He took upon himself our pains, our sicknesses, our infirmities. He knows the exhaustion of being up all night with a sick baby. He knows the ache of a teenager’s heartbreak. He knows the feeling of being stretched too thin. He didn’t just suffer for us; He suffered with us. He knows how to “succor”—or perfectly help—us, because He has felt it all.
Christ in the Doctrine and Covenants: The Lord’s Own Voice
If the Book of Mormon is a testament of Christ, the Doctrine and Covenants is like hearing His voice directly. These modern revelations are a powerful reminder that He is not a distant, historical figure; He is the living, speaking head of His Church today.
His Living Reality and Testimony
Doctrine and Covenants 76:22-24 “And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives! For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.”
This is it. The most direct, powerful, modern testimony. Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon saw Him. This isn’t “once upon a time.” It’s a definitive, first-hand account for our day. He LIVES. This knowledge changes everything. It turns religion from a set of rules into a living, breathing relationship.
Doctrine and Covenants 19:16-19 “For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent; But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink—Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men.”
This is one of the most profound and humbling passages in all of scripture. It’s the Savior describing His own suffering in Gethsemane, in His own words. The raw honesty—”would that I might not drink the bitter cup”—shows the reality of the agony, but His determination to finish for our sake shows the reality of His love.
His Personal Invitation to You and Me
Doctrine and Covenants 6:36 “Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.”
I have this verse written on a notecard taped to my computer monitor. In a world filled with anxiety and distraction, this is the Lord’s simple, powerful prescription. When I’m worried about a child, stressed about everything I need to get dine, or just feeling down, this reminds me where to turn my thoughts. It is a promise of peace.
Christ in the Pearl of Great Price: An Eternal Perspective
This small book gives us a glimpse into the eternities and helps us understand Christ’s role from the very beginning. It’s like seeing the big picture of God’s plan for His children.
His Role as the Creator
Moses 1:33 “And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten.”
Here, God the Father is teaching the prophet Moses. He clarifies that it was Jesus Christ, acting under the Father’s direction, who created this world and worlds without number. He is not just our Savior; He is our Creator, the all-powerful God who framed the heavens and the earth. That adds a whole new layer of awe and reverence for who He is.
His Central Place in the Plan of Salvation
Moses 4:2 “But, behold, my Beloved Son, which was my Beloved and Chosen from the beginning, said unto me—Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.”
This verse takes us back to our pre-mortal life, before we even came to earth. When God our Father presented His plan for us to gain a body and experience, a Savior was needed. Jesus Christ volunteered. He didn’t seek His own glory; He sought to do the Father’s will. His whole purpose, from the very beginning, was to save us.
These Scriptures Are an Invitation
Whew. Friends, this is just the tip of the iceberg. These sacred books are filled with verses that testify of the love, mercy, and power of Jesus Christ. They have been a comfort to me on my darkest days and have magnified my joy on my brightest.
Studying about Christ in these additional books of scripture doesn’t detract from the Bible; it enhances it. It adds more witnesses, more detail, and more love. It helps me know my Savior not just as a figure in a book, but as my living, breathing, personal Redeemer who knows my name.
