A long time back, I did a post on some of my favorite family movies. Since then, I keep remembering more! Showing these movies to my kids is just one way that they can be brought back to my past. And, it’s fun to share it with them! Hmmm…am I crazy, or does it seem that we are seriously lacking in good quality family movies these days? It’s seems they’re either for little, little kids…or they jump up to the teenage scene that is usually too inappropriate for anyone to watch! I am pretty excited for the new Alice in Wonderland…crossing my fingers that we’ll love it.
Before I get to it, I started thinking about our massive movie collection and how only about half of them are even watchable anymore. They have been plagued by years of handling by kids…hence, lots of scratches. I’ve heard about DVD repairing machines and decided to check them out. This is what I found:
This is an expensive sucker, but used by many professionals and video stores to completely restore their discs…making them as good as new! JFJ Easy Pro Universal CD/DVD Repair Machine is a whopping $199 but could easily be justified if you could salvage just 20 of your ruined DVDs. It’s the customer favorite for those with a big collection of movies. It can be found on eBay for around $150.
Though it does not claim to repair scratches, the Scotch Disc Cleaner for CD and DVD is a favorite for basic disc cleaning.
You might have to run the disc through this machine several times to restore it to “good” condition, not “perfect”. But, a much lower price of $29.99 is more reasonable and will likely save many of your loved movies. Digital Innovations 10185 Skip Dr. Motorized AutoMax Scratch Repair System
Here are the latest family movies on my “must see” list:
Savannah Smiles. Remember this one?? The other day I was watching Hansel & Gretel with my kids, you know…the one by Faerie Tale Theatre (my other childhood love). Anyway, I realized the little girl in it was the SAME girl in Savannah Smiles. All these memories came flooding back about how I love that movie too and I MUST have it for my kids (and myself). It’s the story of a sweet little girl who gets kidnapped while playing at the park. She wins the hearts of her captors and….holy cow, you should see the snow storm outside my window…sorry, she changes their lives forever. So cute.
Harry and the Hendersons was another huge favorite. It’s about a family’s drive through the forest that changes their lives forever. They run right over Big Foot! They end up taking him home and realize he’s a big softie. A softie that causes lots of trouble! Oh, the tears I used to hold back as they forced Harry to go back to the forest….awww….sad. One note, I do remember one really blatant “S-word” by one of the kids…pretty lame, but overall great movie!
This movie has fantastic music and is so fun! Popeye is a super quirky movie from the past that always makes me smile!
Willow has it all! It’s an epic fantasy that is intense, funny, romantic, and so endearing! The little kids in this movie are so cute, I could eat them. Who doesn’t love this movie?
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was just one of those movies that made me laugh. It’s the story of two Valley dudes whose life is turned upside-down when they are given a history project to do. They travel in time, meet lots of historical figures and have adventure after adventure. It might be one of those movies that I watch again and think, “why….why??? why did I like this movie?” But, as a kid…I loved it.
Alvin and the Chipmunks – The Chipmunk Adventure is one of my absolute favorites! My kids watch it all the time…oh, and I love the music. I have a fantasy that Alvin & the Chipmunk cartoon episodes will start airing again. That would be a great day in my life. It was one of the best cartoons ever, ever. Anyway, this movie about the chipmunks and the chipettes in a race around the world. Little do they know that they were coerced into this race by some crooks who were using them to transfer their stolen diamonds….great show!
That’s right. I like perverts. Pee-Wee’s episodes were so funny and quirky, and this movie is that, times ten. I think my brothers and I could recite this movie, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure by memory…we loved it that much!
Due to customer demand, Amazon has JUST released the only dvd version of The Incredible Shrinking Woman. It’s a fun movie about an ordinary homemaker who came in contact with a bizarre mix of household chemicals…next thing she knew…she was shrinking. She moves into the Barbie dollhouse and lives life the best she can while her family scrambles to find a way to bring her back to size. A few customer reviews have said a few scenes have been cut out from this new release, which they found irritating. But, overall…it’s the same great movie!
I’ve always had a special place in my heart for Ernest. He’s sweet, innocent, and so funny! Ernest Goes to Camp is about a camp maintenance man who longs to be a counselor. His dumb humor and sincere concern for the wayward, unruly camp boys win them over and end up saving the whole camp from destruction.
If the only version available of this movie is a Korean import (made for all regions), then I’ll take it! This is BY FAR my favorite version of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The quality hasn’t been improved and there are optional Korean subtitles…but, other than that…its the real deal. This movie is adorable and a great depiction of Mark Twain’s most endearing tale. I can’t wait for my kids to see this one.
Tell me your favorites! (That’s a demand.)
