Valentine’s Love Potions ~ A Fun Family Game & Tradition

My kids love Valentine’s Day, almost as much as Christmas…which is pretty amazing, considering they only get some candy and a book for V-day.  But, every year they look forward to the treasure hunt, finding clues all over the house that lead them to candy, and eventually their new book.  It’s been such a fun family tradition!  Anyway, I was thinking this year we would build up to the holiday with more Valentine’s Day activities…something I’ve totally stunk at in the past.  So, to start things off I came up with a little Valentine’s Day fun family game.  The kids had such a blast doing it, that I’m certain it will be begged for every year and will become a new tradition.

While browsing around the local dollar store, I found these adorable ‘message in a bottle’ jars.  Well, the shape of the jar was adorable, but everything else was tacky.  It was stuffed with cheap fake rose petals, a note, and labeled in different languages.  Not so cute, but they were just a dollar, so I figured I could do something with them!  I picked up a handful, peeled off the labels (the ones that came off), used a pencil to wriggle all of the rose petals out, and made some labels of my own.

Labels, like: Itchy Armpits, Laugh Medicine, Pig Snort, Random Paralysis, Burning Love, Shy Tonic, and Completely Crazy.

Hmmm…how to mix the potions and have them taste somewhat decent??  Fruit nectar!

I filled each bottle with a different fruit nectar…pineapple, strawberry, mango, peach, orange, grapefruit, and apple.  The guava had funky chunks, so we nixed that one.

The kids were chomping at the bit to get this started!…ugh, why does mom have to take pictures of everything??  I gathered them around the table and while everyone looked away, they took turns mixing their own concoction of potions.

Once they mixed their potion, they took a drink and were immediately struck with a case of…what the heck did they drink???  They had to act out the combination of the different things they drank.  Whoever guessed the right concoction first, got to go next.

Here goes Audrey, about to take a drink of Laugh Medicine, Random Paralysis, and Burning Love.

Ope, she’s paralyzed.

Caden, reminding Belle what’s in her potion…

…attack!  She drank Completely Crazy and Burning Love!

Shane won for the nastiest drink, by far.  Most of them were tasty, but his tasted like…well, his words were ‘sweaty butt.’

Oh, and look who woke up from his nap to join us, little Joey.

Warning:  There’s something about the potion, Completely Crazy, that really works.  My kids were out-of-their-minds hyper the rest of the day.
