Happy Birthday to my little Shane! Surely, some of you have a need forgift ideas for a 6 year old boy…so, I thought I would share some of the things he’s getting and some of things he would LIKE to get (but isn’t) 🙂
Looking for striped rocks in the yard, after church (hence, the dress clothes.) Oh, that’s his tongue sticking out…in case you thought he had some major lips!
Shane love, love, loves nature! He is always wanting to learn about animals, catch bugs/frogs, and be outside. So, I thought it would be fun to put him together an Adventure Pack…meaning, a backpack filled with things he might need on his outdoor adventures.
Here are some of the things I’m including (or can be included) in the adventure pack:
Fun With Nature – I loved this book because it gives tons of info on all the kinds of things you can find in your own backyard. It talks about all sorts of bugs, frogs, plants, snakes, etc. and “what they look like”, “where to find them”, and “what they eat”. He can carry it around and look up or look for many of the different things he sees in the book, perfect!
You never want the little dude to get lost while exploring…he likely won’t in the backyard but he could while hiking, hunting, or camping with the family. I’m a big believer in whistles. They are easy and small to carry around, but they can save lives. I found this one on Amazon for $4.70…I liked that it came with the lanyard. But, this will definitely be in the backpack!
Why buy kiddie binoculars when these highly popular/rated binocs from Bushnell are only $15 bucks?!? Great for bird and deer watching.
Bugs and leaves are lots more fun to look at when you can see them magnified! Again, I couldn’t find a kiddie version that could compare to the real thing (plus, they’re usually around the same price!) This large magnifying glass was $13.
Shane really wants a camera. He thinks it would be great to take it outdoors with him and take pictures of all the bugs he finds. The adult cameras were too expensive (and complicated) and most of the ones I found were kids looked too “toddler-ish”. I finally stumbled across this Lego Camera that got great reviews! It’s 3 MP, has only like 4 buttons on it (simple!), has a built in memory (no SD card needed), and a flash. Plus, it looks pretty sweet! This is also available in pink/purple/white color combo. The retail price is SUPPOSED to be $49.99 but because they keep selling out everywhere, the price is slightly inflated. I had to pay $59.99 on Amazon but I also saw sellers trying to get more like $80. So, keep checking back if it’s over $60.
Other ideas to include in an adventure pack: a small jar to hold captured bugs, a net, a flashlight, bug spray, sunscreen, chapstick, trail mix, water thermos, a sketch pad/pen, antibacterial wipes, band-aids, mini shovel (trowel) and garden gloves.
Other Gift Ideas…
This is the perfect age for kids to get a bike upgrade. Many six year olds have learned to ride without training wheels and have outgrew their bike. So, time to get the 16″ wheels! This particular Huffy bike is around $80 but we found a Huffy (not that it has to be that brand) at Wal-Mart for $48.
You know my love for LeapFrog Leapsters already, well…they came out with a new one, the Leapster Explorer. It has a bigger, brighter screen, downloadable applications and games, and a spot to attach a camera attachment (which will be available to buy in October). I was trying to decide between this OR the Lego camera…but, my little guy is too excited about getting a camera and he already has the older version of the Leapster, so I didn’t want to have to make him wait until October (or more likely, Christmas) to get the camera attachment. The camera attachment IS supposed to be pretty cool…they can take pictures and change them/goof them up on their leapster screen. Reviewers have really been liking this new explorer, but you should note that it ONLY works with Explorer games, you can’t use the ones from older Leapsters. Boo. I recommend Leapsters for ages 4 to 8. They say up to 9…but, that’s pushing it.
Both of my boys get a kick out of their uncles showing them “magic” tricks…they would love to have some tricks of their own to show off! This Magic Show set comes with an instructional DVD for the kids to watch, 100 tricks, and a carrying case.
Maybe it’s ME that secretly wants a pogo stick…cause, if I say so myself…I’m pretty darn good at them for some weird reason. But, I’m positive that any 6 year old would get a kick out of one too!
Shanie-pants loves drawing, especially animals (being my nature boy). So, I grabbed him this book, How to Draw 101 Animals. There are a whole bunch of “How to Draw” books…dinosaurs, princesses, people, etc.
Just so you know…Shane isn’t getting ALL of this stuff, just some of it. However, he keeps and Amazon wish list…so, it’s easy for me to give you ideas for a 6 year old based on the things on his list. Anyway, he’s also digging remote control cars. I’m thinking this Morphibian Gator Remote Control Car would be perfect for his age! It’s not so complicated to control and it can go on dirt, sand and water!

I did a similar thing for my 13 year old (11 at the time) for Christmas one year. He got “outdoor adventure” stuff … new mud boots, good snow boots, good snow gloves, ropes, wire, pulleys, a bucket, utility scissors, tarp straps, a tarp, “Boys Book of Exploration”, etc. I’ll be honest. At the time, he was disappointed. It wasn’t an electronic or some big huge item. But he has used that stuff SO MUCH! And every time he does I ask him if he was glad he got it. He always gives a resounding YES!!!
I think I’m wishing for the days when my boys were more easily giftable. by age 12 they’ve got all the outdoor and Scout gear a man could hope for (thanks to ManOfTheHouseandWildOutdoors)

Love the ideas!! But I would leave the whistle of the list. No mother or neighbor will love you for that. Someone gave one to the 4 year old next door and I nearly lost my mind. We are off to a party on Saturday so you have given me some great ideas. Thanks
